SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – With portions of the federal government now shut down, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is reassuring veterans that most of their benefits and health care services will continue without interruption.
The VA confirmed that medical care at VA hospitals, outpatient clinics, and Vet Centers will remain fully operational. Compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits will still be processed and delivered, and burials will continue at VA national cemeteries. The Veterans Crisis Line and VA’s main contact center also remain open 24/7.
However, some programs will be paused during the shutdown. According to the VA, career counseling and transition assistance activities are suspended, the GI Bill Hotline and regional benefits offices are closed, and public affairs and outreach efforts to veterans are on hold. In addition, new headstone placements and grounds maintenance at national cemeteries will be delayed, and the VA will not process pre-need burial applications or print new presidential memorial certificates until funding is restored.
The shutdown follows stalled negotiations in Congress. While the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution supported by the administration to extend funding, the Senate has not advanced the measure due to policy disagreements.
Veterans in need of immediate help are encouraged to call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1, or reach the VA directly at 1-800-MyVA411, both available around the clock.
