SHAWANO, WI – State Representative Elijah Behnke is introducing legislation that would shift control over wheel tax decisions from municipalities directly to the people.
Behnke said the proposal is designed to prevent local governments from adding a wheel tax without voter approval. He stressed the measure is about fairness and ensuring taxpayers have a direct voice in how they’re charged.
“As this bill moves forward, I’m prepared to fight for my district, even with pushback in the State Senate,” Behnke said. “I’m just a red-blooded American that loves this country, loves this state. When your constituents’ ideals line up with your own, it’s a no-brainer to go to Madison and write a law to give Shawano County a voice.”
The legislation is currently in the co-sponsorship phase, with the goal of increasing accountability and ensuring Wisconsin residents have a stronger role in tax decisions.
