SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District is calling for an end to a series of homecoming-related vandalism incidents, warning that future events could be in jeopardy if the behavior continues.
Superintendent Kurt Krizan said he was first alerted by the high school principal about reports that went far beyond the traditional pranks usually seen this time of year.
“We had a message with our students last week Friday as part of our pep rally before homecoming,” Krizan said. “We just let them know that we don’t condone, endorse, or sanction any of that type of behavior. It comes down to unlawful entry of private property, and that’s trespassing, vandalism, and damage to property.”
While toilet-papering homes is often expected during homecoming week, Krizan said this year’s incidents have escalated. Reports include frozen paintballs being fired, damage to businesses and homes, and even mailboxes being destroyed, something Krizan noted is a federal offense.
“ We are really looking for help from the community in saying these acts are not okay. It’s gotten out of hand and it needs to stop.”
Krizan said he has already heard from several students who agree the situation has gone too far. “Many pulled me aside after I spoke this morning to say they support the message and feel this has gotten out of hand as well,” he explained.
The superintendent stressed that stopping the vandalism will require students and the wider community to speak up. “We’re really asking our students and our community to help us,” Krizan said. “If they know something, urge people to stop, urge people to speak up and speak out.”
District leaders plan to review the situation after one more night and determine if changes need to be made to homecoming events. “It’s not a decision I want to make,” Krizan said. “But if the behavior continues, we may have no choice but to take action to protect property and keep our community safe.”
