OCONTO COUNTY, WI – Highway 22 travelers could see a smoother, safer drive in the years ahead as the Wisconsin Department of Transportation moves forward with plans for a major upgrade. The project covers the stretch between Oconto Falls and Gillett, where residents may eventually see plenty of orange barrels once construction begins in 2031.
DOT Regional Communications Manager Mark Kantola says the improvements will address significant pavement damage and drainage deficiencies, including replacing culverts to prevent clogs or collapses. “We do have some culverts out there that need to be replaced,” Kantola noted.
As the design phase continues, the DOT is seeking public input on the proposed plans. A virtual public involvement meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. on August 19 via Microsoft Teams, accessible through the WIS 22 Project website. Kantola says the online format allows everyone to see, participate, and share feedback to help shape the final design.
