SHAWANO, WI – With nine confirmed cases of measles reported in nearby Oconto County, health officials are urging residents to take steps to protect themselves and their families from the highly contagious disease.
Nick Mau, Health Director of the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department, says the best defense against measles is getting vaccinated with the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.
“The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated with the MMR vaccine,” Mau said. “There are two doses to that, and once you have that second dose, the vaccine is about 97 percent effective in preventing measles.”
Health experts warn that measles can spread quickly among unvaccinated individuals, especially in public or crowded settings. Anyone unsure of their vaccination status is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider.
With confirmed cases in a neighboring county, Shawano-area health officials are monitoring the situation closely and encouraging community members to stay proactive in preventing further spread.
