
Cynthia “Cindy” Jane (Welch) Nelson
February 15, 1947 – June 30, 2025
Cynthia “Cindy” Jane Nelson, 78, of Shawano, WI, passed away unexpectedly while on vacation in Seattle. Born February 15, 1947, in Rushville, IN, to Cyrus “Cy” and Laura Welch, she was the eldest of five children. Cindy grew up in Footville, WI, graduated from Parkview High School in 1965, and attended the Madison School of Cosmetology.
She married Phillip “Phil” Nelson on April 6, 1968, at the Footville Church of Christ. Together they raised three children: Jeffrey (Jeff) Nelson, Heather (“Jimmy”) Heckler, and Amber (“Butch”) Cornelius, and welcomed two grandchildren: Tyler (Megan) Cornelius and Brady Cornelius.
Cindy lived in Janesville and Shawano, WI, and later Reno, NV, where she worked for Peppermill Properties until retiring in 2012. She and Phil returned to Shawano to be near family.
Known for her kindness, creativity, and talents in cooking, baking, and sewing, Cindy also loved singing with the Sweet Adelines and directed the Shawano chapter.
Cindy is survived by her husband Phil; children Jeff Nelson, Heather(Jimmy) Heckler, Amber(Butch) Cornelius; grandchildren: Tyler(Megan) Cornelius and Brady Cornelius; and 3 of her siblings; Ting (Shirley) Welch, Toby Welch and Enid Campbell, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and youngest brother, Guy Welch.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in Shawano on Sunday, July 27 starting at 1:00 p.m. Food and drink will be provided. Bring positivity along with memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to “The Cindy Nelson Memorial”. Funds, via check or cash, will be dispersed to organizations of her interest.
