SHAWANO, WI-Shawano County is grappling with staffing shortages, with its custodial team now feeling the strain. Steve Dreher, director of facilities and grounds, informed the Shawano County Public Property Committee on September 12 that two out of five custodial positions remain vacant, leading to increased pressure on the remaining staff.
The starting wage for custodial positions is $16.47 per hour, and responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors; cleaning windows, restrooms, and other areas; collecting trash and recyclables; and clearing snow from entrances when needed.
To alleviate some of the pressure, committee members voted to have Dreher’s office explore the option of contracting a cleaning company to maintain the Department of Human Services (DHS) building.
Beyond custodial positions, the county is also struggling to find enough dispatchers and correctional officers for the sheriff’s department, and the public library and DHS both face high turnover rates, especially in part-time roles.
