TOWN OF MORRIS, WI- Shawano County dispatch received a welfare check call regarding a disabled truck and camper on Hwy 29. In the early morning hours Thursday. The caller reported that a male near the vehicle had thrown a folding chair at his semi-truck as he drove past.
Deputies arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact with the male, who then fled on foot while carrying an axe. He climbed a metal grain silo on a nearby property and began making threats about explosives in the truck and camper. As a precaution, Hwy 29 was shut down between Hwy 45 and Co Rd J, and the Shawano County Special Response Team was called in.
Deputies engaged in a two-hour negotiation with the man, who eventually came down from the silo and was detained without further incident. He was evaluated by EMS and transported to a hospital, where Shawano County Human Services placed him on an emergency protective custody hold.
Bomb squads from Marathon and Brown Counties were brought in to assess the truck and camper, which were declared safe. The vehicles were towed, and Hwy 29 reopened around 4:30 AM.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from Tigerton Ambulance, Wittenberg Fire Department, Bowler Fire Department, Tigerton Fire Department, Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, and the Shawano County Highway Department.
Due to the emergency protective hold, no further details or identifying information about the male will be released at this time.
