SHAWANO, WI- Shawano County Administrative Coordinator Jim Davel raised concerns about potential scope expansion during the May 1 meeting of the Shawano County Public Safety Committee, particularly regarding the renovation of showers at the county jail.
The committee was tasked with evaluating bids for the project, with the highest bid standing at approximately $93,000. However, additional costs for new shower fixtures and other necessary items would bring the total to just under $100,000.
Jail Administrator Troy Beyer assured the committee that the project’s funding of $200,000 had been secured through the inmate welfare fund and was approved during the 2024 budget process.
Beyer recommended awarding the contract to Prime Coat Coating Systems, citing their reputable track record in correctional facility renovations. He highlighted their successful completion of similar work at the jail in 2014.
Keith Herm from the county’s maintenance department elaborated on an alternate bid included in the total cost, emphasizing the importance of addressing issues such as mildew buildup on shower walls.
Davel expressed reservations about deviating from the originally approved plan, stressing the importance of adhering to the decision-making process. He suggested involving the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) Committee to address the proposed changes adequately.
