NAVARINO, WI- Navarino Wildlife Area is gearing up for essential construction and repair work, prompting a necessary adjustment in water levels. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will initiate a controlled drawdown on two key flowages within the area: Hanson Flowage and 80 Acre Flowage, starting this spring.
This gradual drawdown process will continue until mid-May when the water levels are expected to reach their lowest point, in preparation for the slated repairs scheduled for the summer of 2024. At the heart of this project is the comprehensive rebuilding of the dikes, encompassing their top, side slopes, and spillways at both Hanson and 80 Acre Flowages.
However, beyond its role in facilitating construction, the drawdown also mirrors a natural aspect of the wetland cycle. By exposing submerged areas to sunlight, this process encourages the growth of seed-producing plants, which serve as a vital food source for diverse wildlife, including waterfowl and shorebirds.
The drawdown initiative underscores the commitment to preserving the ecological integrity of Navarino Wildlife Area. It reflects a thoughtful balance between human intervention and the natural rhythms that sustain the rich biodiversity of the region.
