DE PERE, WI- In a thrilling Bay Conference showdown on a brisk Friday evening in West De Pere, the Shawano Hawks secured a pivotal victory, shutting out the West De Pere Phantoms with a narrow 1-0 win. Tom Keszo emerged as the hero on the mound, delivering a pitching performance that propelled his team.
Keszo’s dominance was evident as he pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit throughout the intense matchup. Remarkably, he achieved this feat with just 75 pitches, showcasing impeccable control and efficiency on the mound. Of those pitches, an impressive 49 found the strike zone, while he also recorded four crucial strikeouts.
Not to be overshadowed, Shawano’s defensive prowess was on full display, particularly noteworthy given the challenging windy conditions. The team rallied behind Keszo, making key plays to stifle West De Pere’s offense and preserve their narrow lead.
The lone run of the game came in the pivotal sixth inning when Dylan Hodkiewicz kickstarted the Hawks’ offense with a well-placed single to left field. Hodkiewicz’s aggressive baserunning paid off as he advanced to second and then to third base on successive wild pitches. The game-changing moment arrived when Warner Beyer’s ground ball forced a throwing error by West De Pere’s shortstop, allowing Hodkiewicz to dash home for the decisive run.
Keszo’s contributions weren’t limited to the mound, as he also made an impact at the plate with two base hits of his own. Warner Beyer and Carsen Herm also made notable offensive contributions, ensuring Shawano capitalized on their scoring opportunities.
