SHAWANO, WI- Shawano pulled off an upset, toppling Xavier with a 5-run surge in the 6th inning. What started as a tightly contested battle saw Shawano cling to a narrow 2-1 lead for the majority of the game. However, Xavier’s Reid Hietpas shook things up with a clutch two-run homer in the top of the 5th, flipping the script to put Xavier ahead 3-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning, and Alex Zierden on second base, Jerzy Brocker stepped up with a crucial base hit to left field, bringing Zierden home and knotting the score at 3-3. Brocker’s hit proved to be the spark Shawano needed as Carsen Herm followed suit with another solid hit to left field, propelling Shawano into a 4-3 lead.
The momentum continued to build as Crew Weisnicht blasted a rocket up the middle, advancing Herm to second base. Then, Pete Bruette delivered the decisive blow, smashing a triple into the right-center gap, scoring both Herm and Weisnicht and propelling Shawano to a commanding 6-3 lead. Tom Keszo capped off the explosive inning with a single to right, bringing Bruette home and extending Shawano’s lead to 7-3.
At the plate, Shawano’s offensive stars shone brightly, with Jerzy Brocker, Pete Bruette, and Tom Keszo each tallying 2 hits on the night. The team combined for an impressive 9 hits.
On the mound, Tom Keszo started strong for Shawano, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2 and issuing 4 walks. Pete Bruette stepped in to secure the win, pitching 2 2/3 innings of solid relief, holding Xavier scoreless while striking out 3 and issuing 3 walks.
