WAUPACA, WI- A judge ruled on Wednesday that Tony Haase will stand trial starting July 14, 2025, for the 1992 murders of Tanna Togstad and Timothy Mumbrue. The trial is scheduled to last six weeks.
Togstad, 23, and Mumbrue, 35, were found stabbed to death in their Royalton farmhouse on March 21, 1992. According to the autopsy report cited in the criminal complaint, Togstad died from a single stab wound to the chest, while Mumbrue sustained multiple stab wounds. Their pet dog was also killed.
Haase, now 53, was charged in August 2022. He was identified as a suspect after a DNA sample was taken from him during a traffic stop, which matched fluids recovered from Togstad’s body. Initially denying involvement, Haase later admitted to the murders during police questioning.
Haase disclosed that he had been heavily intoxicated on the evening of March 20, 1992, and went to Togstad’s home. He claimed he did not intend to harm anyone but got into a “scuffle” with Mumbrue, during which he stabbed him. Haase then punched Togstad, who had started to stir, before fatally stabbing her.
The trial date was set far in advance due to pending evidence turnover and a defense motion to suppress Haase’s statements to police. Additional motions and hearings are scheduled leading up to the trial.
