Arbutus Mae (Wegner) Schneider, age 91 of Cecil, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent Hospital on Thursday, March 7, 2024. She was surrounded with love when she went to be with her Heavenly Father.
Arbutus was the youngest child of Robert and Ida (Klapper) Wegner, born on the home farm near Cecil on April 3, 1932. She grew up farming and living off the land. She graduated from Bonduel High School with the class of 1949.
On August 8, 1953, Arbutus married Kenneth Schneider at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Cecil. Following their marriage and Kenneth’s discharge from the Army, the couple spent their first years on the Wegner family homestead. The couple then lived in Appleton for a short time before moving to the Pulcifer area, when their daughter Joyce was 9 days old, where they owned and operated a family farm and raised three children. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage before Kenneth’s death on March 22, 2018.
Arbutus was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Cecil where she had been a Sunday School teacher and helped with many pancake dinners. She was a Shawano County Fair exhibitor from the time she was in 4-H as a child until 2022. Arbutus was a former member of Grandview Homemakers and the Pulcifer Riverside Riders Snowmobile Club. Her hobbies included gardening, photography, traveling, local history and ancestry.
Arbutus is survived by her children, Jerry (Alice) Schneider, Cecil, Joyce (Roger) Olson, Shawano, and JoAnn “Josy” (Steve “Doc” Schmidt) Schneider, Gillett; grandchildren, Jesse (Tieha) Schneider, Lisa (Matt) Dazell, and Nikki Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Harlan and Stanley Schneider and Elijah Dazell; sisters-in-law, Shirley Wegner and Barb Schneider; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Marvin Neumann; brother, Melvin Wegner; brothers-in-law, Vernon (Bernice) Schneider and Clarence Schneider Jr.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Cecil from 9 am until the funeral service at 11 am with Rev. Moira Finley officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. John’s UCC Cemetery in Cecil. Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring is assisting the family with arrangements.
