GREEN BAY, WI- A Neopit resident was handed a two-year prison sentence Brian J. Peters of Neopit on March 4 in federal court for engaging in sexual contact with a 16-year-old girl.
Court records reveal that on February 11, 2023, the girl reported to Menominee Tribal Police that she and another person, the granddaughter of Brian J. Peters, had consumed alcohol at Peters’ residence until they fell asleep on a living room couch.
Upon waking up, the girl found Peters touching her inappropriately beneath her pants. She promptly pushed Peters away, and he retreated to his bedroom. She, along with Peters’ granddaughter, confronted him by entering his bedroom, expressing their displeasure through punches and kicks to his head and body.
Subsequently, the girl went outside, contacted tribal police, and summoned her sister to pick her up.
Peters was arrested that same night, held in tribal custody, and, after pleading guilty, received a nine-month sentence, a $6,500 fine, and two years of probation.
In November, Peters pleaded guilty to a sexual contact charge, acknowledging the wrongdoing and expressing remorse. The potential penalties included a maximum of three years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a minimum of one year of supervised release.
Despite the defense’s request for leniency, U.S. District Judge William Griesbach opted for a harsher sentence, doubling the recommended prison time and imposing five years of supervised release.
Peters is now required to report to prison on a date determined by the Bureau of Prisons.
