MADISON, WI- Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has scheduled a public hearing to discuss a proposed rule aimed at establishing fish refuges in Milwaukee, Outagamie, and Waupaca counties. Fish refuges are crucial for preventing overharvesting, particularly in areas where fish gather for spawning.
The DNR’s emergency rule, if approved, will establish additional seasonal refuges in spawning marshes linked to the Wolf River in Outagamie and Waupaca counties, specifically to protect spawning walleye.
To facilitate public engagement, an online hearing is scheduled for February 5 at 5:30 p.m., providing an opportunity for stakeholders to learn more about the proposed rules and offer their comments.
Public comments on both the emergency and permanent rules will be accepted during the hearing. Additionally, individuals can submit written comments to DNRFWPFHGuidance@wisconsin.gov. The DNR emphasizes that written comments will carry the same weight and effect as spoken comments presented during the hearing. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to conservation efforts and seeks input from the community to ensure comprehensive and effective fishery management.
