Warren Joseph Thunder, Sr. age 73, of Zoar, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Warren was born in Keshena on November 11, 1950, son of the late Walker and Philomena (Sheshequon) Thunder, Sr. On April 20, 1974, he was united in marriage to Sue Hasselquist at St. Bonaventure Church in Chicago, IL. Warren was extremely active in his youth and loved playing all sports, especially boxing. He was a talented boxer and was proud to have participated in the Golden Gloves Tournaments and the Olympic Trials. In 2009 he was honored to be inducted into the Menominee Nation Athletic Hall of Fame. Warren worked as a truck driver in the logging industry for many years, retiring in 2014. He had quite the sense of humor and was always telling jokes, he loved to playfully pick on people and gave everyone nicknames. Warren loved kids and was a great influence on the children of his community. He spent countless hours coaching youth sports and playing with the neighborhood kids. More recently he enjoyed spending his free time playing bingo. Warren was always positive and uplifted those around him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and role model, and will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Left to cherish Warren’s memory are: his wife of 50 years Sue Thunder; his children, Linda (William Day) Thunder, Warren “J.R.” (fiancé Stephanie Rhode) Thunder Jr., Jacob (Erin) Thunder, Danielle (Ryan) Coffey, and Cherie (Bradley Couture) Thunder; his grandchildren, Tim, Trevor, Brandi, Selena, Calista, Andrea, Tyler, Tristan, Mya, Riley, Keenan, Aiden, Isabella and Marley; his great-grandchildren, Caden, LeRoia, Presley, Jordan, Sterling, Dominic, Lorelei and Azaria; siblings, Gerhardt (Rogerine) Wychesit and Twila (Clayton) Neconish; sisters-in-law, Linda and Ann; and his brother-in-law Kurt Hasselquist. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: a granddaughter, Sienna; his parents, Walker, Sr. and Philomena; his siblings, Leon Wychesit, Henry Wychesit, Alan “Gigalo” Gebourd, Melvin “Peanut” Beauprey, Walker “Sonny” Thunder, Sherry (Greg) Thunder, Vaughn Thunder, Wallace Ann, Francis Songetay, and Carmen Wychesit; a brother-in-law Johnny; and a sister-in-law Kathy.
A prayer service for Warren will be held at the Neopit Community Center at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, with Dave Grignon officiating. Visitation will begin at the Community Center at 3:00 pm on Monday, January 29, 2024, and continue until the time of the service on Tuesday.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Warren’s grandson, Tim, for the loving care he provided to Warren.
