NEW LONDON, WI- New London City Council members have opted to forego proposed pay increases that would have taken effect after the next election. During their October 17 meeting, the council considered an ordinance for its first reading, which aimed to authorize higher compensation for elected officials. The Finance and Personnel Committee had recommended these changes on October 4.
The proposed adjustments included raising the mayor’s base annual salary to $8,400, in addition to $40 for each meeting attended and $60 for meetings where they served as a committee chair. Annual salaries for alderpersons were set to increase to $4,000, with similar meeting attendance and committee chair payments.
However, when the discussion turned to the compensation increases, Council Member Bob Besaw introduced amendments to the proposed ordinance. His amendments aimed to maintain the mayor’s salary at $6,400 per year and keep council members’ salaries at $3,000 per year.
The council approved these amendments with a 6-4 vote.
