SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Hawks topped Wausau East 75-70 in a Regional Semifinal game at Shawano. The two teams kept the game close for the first 18 minutes and finished the first half tied 40-40. East did not surrender the lead to Shawano for the final 8 minutes of the first half and well into the second half. Free throws made the difference as the Hawks were 19 of 24 from the line. Michael Metcalf-Grassman had two key blocked shots in the game’s final sequence to secure the win and finished the game with 29 points and was 11 of 11 from the free throw line.
Jacob Landon had 20 and Brandon Reed added 17 to lead Shawano. Jesse Napgezek led the Lumberjacks with 24 points. The game consisted of many fouls as many players were in foul trouble late.
Michael Metcalf-Grassman was just named Co-Conference player of the year with Xavier’s Alex Sherwood.
Next up for the Hawks is Mosinee. The Indians opened the season on fire with 9 straight wins before hitting the strength of their schedule where they lost 4 of 6, including losses to Northland Pines, Medford, Kaukauna and Marathon (All Regional Finalists Tonight). They closed out the year with three straight losses, followed by three
straight wins. Mosinee is shooting 51 percent from the field, 58 percent from the line and 36 percent
from behind the arc. They have out rebounded their opponents 34-21 per game this season. They are a
big team with 6”6 Senior Davin Stoffel leading the way with 18.1 ppg. Junior Keagen Jirschele is scoring
16.7 points a game and Landen Thomer and Blake Nichols are both scoring 9.1 points a game.
On Friday, Mosinee topped Merrill 79-47. Mosinee jumped out to a big 40-17 first half lead, with most of their scoring from the inside. They opened the game on a 22-7 run, including a pair of three-pointers to start. Davin Stoffel led the Indians with 16, Blake Nichols added 13 and Landon Thomer and Keagen Jirschele added 10.
Shawano is 3-2 against Mosinee since the 2002 season. Their last meeting was in 2018 when the Hawks won 59-53 in the regular season. Shawano turned a 1 point halftime lead into a victory. Alex Mueller led Shawano with 16. Kaden
Richards and Jacob Lacy both scored 10. Mosinee got 13 points from Seth Kuhn and Luke Spink.
