APPLETON, WI- Two people died and several others were injured in crashes that took place Sunday afternoon on I-41.
An OWI rollover crash was reported around 3:30 p.m in the northbound lanes of I-41. The driver sustained serious injuries and was arrested on a suspected OWI.
The crash led to a backup on the northbound lanes of the Highway, and resulted in a pickup truck swerving into the ditch to avoid hitting another vehicle. A male passenger in the vehicle was ejected and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the truck, a pregnant female, had life-threatening injuries and is suspected of operating while under the influence of a controlled substance.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-41 were shut down for the helicopter to land. This caused additional traffic to back up and a five-vehicle crash occurred. Officials say multiple people were taken to the hospital with injuries. A male driver of a vehicle involved in that crash was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were several other minor crashes during the events.
