SHAWANO CO, WI- The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office are recommending charges related to a bonfire explosion that took place last month. Sheriff officials say they have concluded their investigation.
“This was a very lengthy and extensive investigation which took a significant amount of time to gather all necessary facts,” Shawano County Chief Deputy George Lenzner said.
Charges have been forwarded for review against a 17-year-old male from Green Bay, to the Shawano County
District Attorney’s Office. Charges have also been forwarded for review against a 16-year-old male from Pulaski, to
Shawano County Human Services – Juvenile Intake Division. Charges recommended against both individuals include Second
Degree Reckless Injury, as well as Injury by Negligent Handling of Fire. There will also be charges forwarded for review
against the homeowner, who was present during this incident. These charges will be forwarded later this week to the
Shawano County District Attorney’s Office.
“This was a tragic event,” Lenzner said. “An event that due to reckless, and negligent behavior of those responsible, caused physical, emotional, and mental pain for those affected. ”
Lenzner says it is a good reminder about property owner responsibility. “If you own the property and you know that there are underage people who are drinking, it’s your responsibility to make them leave or make us aware.”
He said their have been cases were property owners have been fined for not taking action.
“Those who host the most, lose the most,” Lenzner said. “You are taking on a risk when you decide to do that.”
