OCONTO, WI- A man accused of killing two people after admitting that he heard voices telling him to kill someone was in court on Friday. A $1 million dollar cash bond was set for 27-year-old David Steinmetz. He is charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the deaths of 55-year-old Lori Steinmetz and 75-year-old Paul Brennan. He is also charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to court records, Steinmetz had vehicle problems , and his mom and Brennan rented a vehicle and went to get him. The group all returned to a residence in Little Suamico. Steinmetz admitted to police that he had been using meth on a daily basis. According to the complaint, Steinmetz heard a voice telling him that he had to take a life or his would be taken. According to the complaint, Steinmetz felt that if he did not take his mom’s life, someone would take out more of his family so he justified it as saving other lives.
The two victims each suffered multiple gunshot wounds, the complaint states.
Police had been to the home previously, with an investigator describing Steinmetz’s relationship with Brennan as “contemptuous,” and Steinmetz had threatened his mother’s life in the past, according to the complaint.
