CASS COUNTY, MO- Garland Nelson was convicted Friday for killing two brothers from Shawano County in 2019.
Nelson entered a guilty plea to the murders of Nick and Justin Diemel and reached a plea deal related to federal fraud charges.
In 2019, the Diemel Brothers went to Nelson’s Missouri farm to collect a $250,000 payment related to their cattle business. Nelson had been in a business dispute with the Diemels stemming from an agreement for Nelson to feed cattle delivered to him by the Diemels. Nelson admitted that he has shot the two men and placed their bodies in barrels and burned them, then dumped the remains of one in a large pile of cow manure, and the other in a mineral supplement bucket that wasn’t located until November of 2020, in Lincoln County, Nebraska.
Court records and police records revealed that Nelson shot the brothers and burned their bodies.
During a Friday hearing, Nelson pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in the first degree, court records show. Several other counts were dismissed.
At the hearing, Nelson admitted shooting the brothers, burning their bodies and disposing of the remains.
Nelson was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without any opportunity for parole.
“I am hopeful that the Diemel family will now be able to return to their lives without this hanging over them,” special assistant prosecutor Stephen Sokoloff said in a news release. “I know that no sentence can bring Nick and Justin back to them, but they can sleep knowing that Nelson will be behind bars for the rest of his life.”
