SHAWANO, WI- After failed attempts to find an attorney, Ann Retzlaff will represent herself in her court proceedings. The 53-year-old told the courts that it was her course of action during a bail/bond hearing on Thursday.
Retzlaff is charged with bail jumping and disorderly conduct after she was arrested on outstanding warrants in her first case.
In May of 2021, a traffic stop was conducted after Retzlaff allegedly failed to stop at a traffic light. Authorities say she did not pull over and traffic spikes had to be used on her vehicle. According to the report, once the deputies made contact with Retzlaff, she refused to get out of her vehicle and stated that she was a sovereign citizen. According to the report, Retzlaff tried to get away once the deputy tried to open her door, and nearly hit the deputies. Retzlaff was then allegedly pulled from the vehicle and taken into custody.
A warrant was issued for her arrest after she got on on bond and failed to show up for court on two occasions. She has been in jail since April 20.
During the hearing, Retzlaff requested a signature bond, but Judge Michael Moran lowed the cash bond to $15,000. He said he was concerned that she does not recognize the courts authority and would not show up for court.
It was also learned that Retzlaff filed federal lawsuits against the deputies that arrested her last year. A total of two lawsuits were filed against two deputies, claiming her federal civil rights were violated. Retzlaff claimed police, brutality, kidnapping, conspiracy to cover up human trafficking and violations of her Second, Fourth and Fifth amendment rights.
