SHAWANO, WI- A March For Teachers is scheduled to take place in downtown Shawano on Saturday. Organizers say it is a peaceful march with a strong message behind it.
“We will not only show our teachers that we care, but also open the eyes of the community that something is wrong.”
In recent months, many teachers have decided to retire or resign from the Shawano School District and that is a concern for many. School Board member Mart Grams said during a recent school board meeting that he did the math.
“We have lost 197 years of teaching experience since the start of the school the year,” Grams said. “We need to take this seriously.”
Parents who are supporting the march say they want the teachers to know that they have their back. “We need to do more and by doing this march, we can make a difference. We want board members there, teachers there, parents, students and children. We want to get the whole community involved to show how much we care.”
The March For Teachers takes place days before the next school board election. Organizers say they hope the march will encourage people to cast their ballots on Tuesday.
“Not everyone knows what is going on and it is a lot of times the older people that vote. We also need to voice our opinion on how important it is for our new voters to vote”
The walk will begin at the Elizabeth Street Skate Park and will end at Franklin Park. The walk will begin at 11:00AM. All are welcome to walk, attend or make signs and show support.
“We need to let everybody know that change is good, and it is time to make a difference.
