OCONTO FALLS, WI- The Freedom Irish are a win away from their first trip to State in more than 30 years. Freedom advanced with a 48-31 win over Northland Pines.
A second half timeout may have been the just what Freedom needed to cool down Northland Pines shooting in a Sectional Semifinal Wednesday. After a 9-0 Eagles run, Coach John Miron rallied the troops. “We held them to two points the rest of the way after that,” said Landon VanCalster. Freedom went on a 17-2 run to secure the victory.
“The key was our defense, holding them to 31 points was key,” VanCalster said. “We work on it everyday in practice and we are going to keep working on it so hopefully, we can take a trip down to Madison.”
Freedom was last at State in 1990 when they won the title and their only other trip to State was in 1979.
“We came in with a great deal of respect for them,” Coach John Miron said. “I thought their defense was outstanding and we just started breaking them down.”
