SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano Fireworks Committee is promising another good show for 2021.
“We have a committee of very dedicated members that have been doing this for quite a few years and they have been working hard the last year to make this happen,” said Paul Kersten, Shawano Fireworks Committee Chairperson.
He says it is a year-round operation and this year was especially challenging due to COVID-19.
“We accept donations all-year round but we really hit it hard in the Spring, but that is when many businesses were starting to recover and bounce back.”
Last year, Shawano was one of few communities to hold their show. Kersten says that had a lot to do with how they do their show in Shawano. “We knew we would not be taking in as much when it comes to donations and we decided that because we could social distance, we were still able to do some sort of show.”
He says due to people watching from all over the community, they have to shoot bigger and higher and they were able to promote social distancing. He says this year the show will be bigger than last year.
“We did not shoot off as large of shells last year, but with this year getting back to normal, they will go back to the larger shells and will be shooting them off more often.”
Kersten says there are many places to watch the show. The Airport grounds will be open and there will also be watch parties. One location that people are watching from is Hope Community Church. Another location that many enjoy the show from is Shawano Lake.
“Boaters on the lake tonight are encouraged to leave their lights on and be patient when it comes to getting off the water at the end of the night.”
Kersten says that goes for vehicle traffic as well.
“All traffic will be directed either north or south depending on what side you are on. Police Department is going to be directing all traffic from the airport South into town. Any traffic on the side of Gumar Road will be directed North towards the lake by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.”
The process is already underway for collecting donations for next year.
