SHAWANO, WI- Masks in the Shawano School District are no longer required, but still highly recommended.
“It still makes all the sense in the world to mask when you are indoors. I can only hope that all of us use common sense and good judgement because we want our kids to stay in school and have all the opportunities that they are hoping for.”
School Board President Michael Sleeper told TCHDailynews.com that the school board was informed Thursday by Superintendent Randi Anderson that the only mask requirement was tied to the Governor’s Statewide Mandate.
“We went back and reviewed our reentry plan, so in reality, when the Supreme Court overturned that mandate, we no longer had a mask mandate in our district,” Sleeper said.
Sleeper said unlike other schools like Bonduel, Shawano School District never implemented their own policy when it came to masks.
“That would be the prevailing policy unless the board would decide to adopt a mask mandate,” Sleeper said. “At this point, with three weeks left, that would be illogical.”
Sleeper said in reality, masking was no longer mandated once the Supreme Court made their ruling, but it is not that it slipped through the cracks.
In a statement to a parent that contacted Superintendent Randi Anderson, she explained how this came to the forefront of discussion.
Sleeper said the mandate part of the equation is not where the focus should be.
“It is not that we are out of the woods, but with vaccinations and lower positivity rates, this would not be a time to get into a wrestling match about should be or should we not adopt a mask mandate,” he said. “Masking is still encouraged and at the end of the day, common sense needs to prevail. COVID is not going away tomorrow and we have to work and act smart.”
