
BONDUEL, WI- A gas leak at Lee’z Gas & Mini Mart in Bonduel caused travel to be restricted for about an hour in the late morning on Thursday.
“We had a vehicle pull up against the building and struck and severed the main gas meter going into the building.” said Bonduel Police Chief Eric Krause.”We had to shut down the highway and a couple of the businesses in the area.”
Chief Krause said Highway 117 was completely shut down for about 45 minutes until the gas was shut off and the scene was safe. Highway 117 was then open to one lane until all the equipment was cleared out.
He said it also had an impact on a nearby school as some children that were on a playground at a nearby school back into the building.
Krause said being a gas station with natural gas and a vehicle that had an engine running, they were concerned about an explosion.
“When you have an explosion at a gas station, that becomes hazardous in a hurry.”
Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, Bonduel Fire, and WE Energies all assisted at the scene. There were not any injuries reported.
The gas station itself was closed after the incident for an unknown amount of time.
