SHAWANO, WI- A Shawano County Sheriff Deputy was injured in a snowmobile crash in the east-central portion of the county over the weekend. Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber says the deputy was just patrolling on a snowmobile when the accident occurred.
“One of our deputies hit an object or bump on the trail system and lost control of the sled,” Bieber said. “He was separated from the sled and suffered multiple broken ribs.”
He says snowmobile patrol is common in the winter months.
“We have deputies that work snow patrol on weekends and we have deputies that patrol on snowmobiles in areas that we are asked to patrol.”
Bieber says the deputy was released from the hospital and will be fine.
“We all know that this job can be dangerous at times but we know that it is part of the job. It is one of my worst fears that deputies are going to come back hurt or not come back at all.”
Bieber says he expects the recovery process to take a few weeks.
The DNR is investigating the crash and Bieber says that is the typical protocol if there is a crash involving law enforcement.
