Maripaul G. Schley (Paulie), age 94, of Clintonville passed away at her home on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. With her, at the time of her death, were her 8 children and her one surviving sister. In almost any other time such a passing would be considered the normal course of events. This year, however, to die at home, surrounded by all the people who most love and care for you, is rare. Paulie got her wish.
Born to Arthur and Genevieve (Goerlinger) Long, Maripaul Germaine Long grew up and spent most of her life in Clintonville. She attended St. Rose Catholic grade school, graduated from Clintonville (Class of ’44) and briefly worked in Chicago.
In February of 1949, Paulie was married to George Zoch in Minneapolis, MN. During their marriage, the couple was blessed with four children. George’s career with Cargill transferred this growing family from Illinois to Tennessee and on to Iowa. After an acute illness, George preceded Paulie in death after only 6 ½ years of marriage. Paulie returned to Clintonville and began to raise her young family in her childhood home. She found employment in the office of Dr. Larsen where she worked for several years.
In 1960 Paulie met and married Victor Schultz. She and Vic were also blessed with four more children. The family still resided in this childhood home on 6th street where Paulie enjoyed life as a full-time homemaker. One more time, married life ended too soon. Vic Schultz, at the age of 58, died in 1975.
In the ensuing years, Paulie worked as a travel agent with K Travel for close to twenty years. There were exciting years of curling and she played some of the Waupaca Curling Team’s legendary games. Then, once again, Paulie took a chance on married happiness as she and Charlie Schley wedded in 1990. They resided for the next ten years in Charlie’s house on the north side of town until Charlie died in 1999.
Moving back home to 6th Street, Paulie started wintering in Clintonville and spent as much time as weather permitted at her cottage on Sevenmile Lake. She loved life at the lake, loved soaking her feet at the end of the dock, loved fishing, loved playing deck dice and spending time with all the many friends and family from the different chapters of her life. Tuning the channel to Jeopardy was a daily routine no matter what was her location. One sadness to viewing this game was that she was no longer able to review the final Jeopardy question her with her cousin, Bill, who had also preceded her in death.
Paulie was both a devoted member of St. Rose Catholic Church and a Packer fan. It might be a close contest to count how many religious items vs. Packer paraphernalia can be found on her walls. When not watching a football game, she was always ready to play sheepshead, cribbage, 500 or any number of other games. She also taught more than one grandchild the pitfalls of gambling at that big table up north.
Paulie had her ways: at weddings – she danced, at local football games – she walked the sidelines. Her way of walking is to tip into the wind and move quickly. Her way of being is to keep her door open and welcome people in. She especially liked having people pop in.
In general: she loved life, she loved people and was one of the lucky ones who was able to live every last minute of it right where she wanted to be.
Survivors include eight children: Anne Lindeke of Three Lakes, David Zoch of Clintonville, Jane (Andy) Ippolito of Madison, George (Donna) Zoch of Woodruff, Paul (Kathi) Schultz of Watersmeet, MI, Victoria (Ed Iwanski) Grundy of Cary, IL, Dr. Jean (Mike Johnston) Schultz of Rochester, MN, and Mark (Sheri) Schultz of Kronenwetter. a sister, Rose Long of Clintonville; There are three stepchildren, Dave (Jeannie) Schley, Laurie (Terry) Ross, and Scott Schley, all of Clintonville. She is further survived by 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Maripaul was preceded in death by her parents; her three husbands; a son-in-law, Hal Lindeke; one sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Lee Arndt; and one brother and sister-in-law, James and Lorraine Long.
