SHAWANO, WI- Local grocery stores were having a difficult time keeping smaller turkeys in the freezer leading up to Thanksgiving this year.
At Charlie’s County Market, General Manager Kelly Sufka said they had a high demand for the 8 to 10 pound turkeys.
“They definitely hit the small turkeys a lot more than the bigger ones. We were really busy so it really seems that more people are staying home this year.”
Sufka says more families are cooking for smaller groups this year. She says it led to a demand for more birds and portions for 5 or 6 people instead of 20.
Sufka says that demand also impacted the rest of the Turkey Day fixings.
“We were getting to the point where we were starting to not be able to get some of the product in.”
Sufka says she assumes it will be similar in December for Christmas food, and says people should keep that in mind and remember, the earlier you plan, the better selection you will have.
“The shopping has been cranked up a little bit and it has been a different world in the grocery business since March.”
