Ongoing partnerships around Shawano County are improving the local waterways through shoreline restoration
CECIL – Connecting Our Waters, a partnership of the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance (FWWA) and the Waterways Association of Menominee and Shawano Counties (WAMSCO), is working with the Town of Washington to add native plants to the Swan Acres Boat Launch on Shawano Lake.
In 2019, the Swan Acres boat launch was identified as a potential restoration location during the Shawano Lake shoreline survey. Connecting Our Waters has been planning and prepping the Swan Acres boat launch for the delivery of 864 native plant plugs.
On September 13 at 9 am, volunteers will be descending on the Swan Acres boat launch in an effort to get all the native plants in the ground. Volunteers helping plant this project will be from Wipfli LLC, Fox Cities Roller Derby, Wild Ones – Wolf River Chapter, WAMSCO, and Shawano Area Waterways Association.
The goal of this type of project is to improve the water quality coming off the parking lots. “The Swan Acres boat launch has some algae and duckweed issues. The addition of these native plants will slow down the water coming off the parking lot and should help to improve these conditions,” says Emily Henrigillis of the Fox-Wolf Watershed Alliance.
Volunteers are still welcome to join. Please bring a mask, work gloves, and your own hand shovel. Dress appropriately for the weather and come learn about the importance of native plants.
