SHAWANO, WI-The Shawano Police Department has decided to cancel this year’s National Night Out due to COVID-19 concerns.
The decision was made after the event was already postponed.
Police Chief Dan Mauel said they wanted to hold the event, but there was no way it could be held in a manner that would keep everyone safe.
“Our main concern is that the event does bring in a lot of people at times.”
He says they had to cancel the bounce house and would not be able to allow kids to have the experience of going in the vehicles or trying on the equipment.
“It was a hard decision, but we would have had to start spending money about a month and a half ago,” Mauel said. “We would have been spending donor money and not knowing where we were going to be, it was the right decision.
Donated funds will go towards the 2021 event.
“It is unfortunate, but we are just following what the county health department and the state is recommending for large gatherings.
