SHAWANO, WI- Shawano Municipal Utilities has received reports of a scam that is using their name to collect money from victims.
The utility company said someone came into their office and told them that they were scammed out of $1,500 dollars by someone claiming to represent WE Energies and then SMU. The caller threatened to disconnect the victim’s gas and electric service within 24 hours if their bill was not paid.
It was reported that the caller claimed that $900 dollars was needed by using a special cash card that the victim had to buy.
The customer told SMU that they were called four times and three $500 dollar payments were extracted and then the caller demanded another payment, they decided to go to the office to plead their case and ask to not be disconnected, giving SMU administration an indication that they have been scammed.
SMU says they will not call demanding payments by special cash card or Bitcoin. If any customers receive calls doing so, they are reminded to not give the caller any payment. SMU says they do not make calls threatening immediate disconnection or demanding payment. The best bet is to contact SMU at 715-526-3131 if you have any concerns.
