SHAWANO, WI- Boating on the Wolf River and the channel has a new obstacle, after several boats have been damaged from hitting logs that are floating just under the water.
Gary DeFere, President of Shawano Area Waterways Management says the fast currents are causing logs that have been underwater for years to break free.
“There is not much that we can do,” says DeFere. “We really have no authority to go out and do anything.”
He says it is causing a headache for boaters.
“There have been a lot of lower units wiped out.”
According to Shawano Area Waterways Management (SWAM), the currents are also causing the channel markers to move.
“Be alert and watch where you are going, I know that is easier said then done.”
Crews are working to replace the markers, but say boaters just have to be cautious when operating on the
Wolf River.
“You are safe on the lake, if you are boating, boat there,” DeFere said. “The river is beautiful but things do move.”
