WAUPACA, WI -A Waupaca County man has been charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle that resulted in the death of a Neenah bicyclist.
20-year-old Owen Ward is accused of operating a vehicle that caused a fatal crash on Stratton Lake Road in the Town of Dayton last month.
67-year-old Debra Johnson of Neenah was riding her bike at the time and was struck by the vehicle. She was airlifted to the hospital and later died.
According to the criminal complaint, Ward told investigators that he had to slow down when the speed limit changed and did not see the cyclist in the middle of the road. The investigation revealed skid marks that started 167 feet away from the point of impact and determined that the vehicle was traveling in excess of 60 miles per hour in the 35 miles per hour zone, according to the complaint.
