TIGERTON, WI – Add Tigerton Lumberjack Days to the list of canceled summer events.
“This would have been the 55th year.”
The decision announced Wednesday by the Tigerton Advancement Association and the American Legion Post 226.
Tigerton Advancement Association President Wally Breitenfledt says even thought the event is in late August, they have concerns about the preparations needed.
Breitenfeldt says one of the big preparations is selling raffle tickets for the festival.
“We have young ladies that go out and sell raffle tickets around this time of year and we are talking 1st graders through 4th graders.”
He says the concern is that many parents might not want their kids doing that at this time for safety reasons and it would not be feasible to ask them to put themselves and their families at risk. He says the other issue is that it is usually done at community events in the area.
“Most of those events are not happening.”
The event is based on volunteers and donations from many area businesses that have been affected by COVID-19.
“A lot of stuff that we have is based on donations and it is hard to talk to businesses that have been closed for the last two months and say, hey we would like a donation,” Breitenfeldt said.
He says it also comes down to the structure of the event and what would be required.
“To following the sanitizing and social distancing rules, we just felt it would be too difficult.”
In the meantime, the Tigerton Advancement Association will try to have their Senior Christmas Dinner this year and continue to award scholarships. This year, scholarships were awarded to seniors Nathaen Wanta and Bethany Kreklow.
It is possible that a winter fundraiser could happen if needed.
“We are planning for a bigger and stronger year next year and just go from there.”
