PLAINFIELD, WI – (Wisconsin Radio Network) – Both lanes of Interstate 39 were shut down Sunday after a dust storm caused multiple accidents. It happened near Plainfield where a 26-car pileup in the southbound lane and four two-car wrecks in the northbound lane forced officials to close the route just after 1 PM.
Thankfully, only a handful of injuries were reported, and troopers said none appear to be serious.
A red flag warning was in effect for the area at the time, and officials say those high winds picked up dust from a nearby field, blowing it across the roadway and causing reduced visibility. Those conditions forced officers to keep the highway closed into Sunday evening for safety’s sake even after the mess was cleaned up.
