MADISON, WI – Governor Ever’s new “Safe at Home” order has left people wondering how it will impact hunting and fishing.
The Wisconsin DNR says as long as you are willing to stay close to home, everything is a go, for now.
“Governor Evers order recognizes outdoor activity as an essential activity. You are encouraged to hunt, trap and fish in your communities only,” said Sarah Hoye, Communications Director with the Wisconsin DNR. “The Wisconsin waters are open, you are able to fish, you are able to hunt within the current regulations, however, stay in your community.”
She said the parks are open and everyone is encouraged to take advantage of the outdoors, as long as they are following social distancing requests.
“Getting outdoors has such wonderful benefits for both mind and body, but we do want people to maintain that social distance. Stay six-feet away from people at all times.”
Hoye also said people need to keep track of what is being called a “social circle,” which is a small group of five that you spend a lot of time with. She says those people it would be okay to engage in outdoor activity with, as long as you keep your distance.
“Perhaps maybe you and a loved one have been together through this whole thing, that would be fine, but you really don’t want to call your buddy from across the state and have him meet you at a pier so you can get on a boat together.
Hoye says the most important thing to remember is to stay close to home and to realize that things could change anytime.
“We understand this is the peak season for outdoor activity so we will update information as often as it changes.”
