CLINTONVILLE, WI – “We are still working and the city still goes on and must go on.”
That was one message that Clintonville Mayor Rich Beggs told Clintonville residents in a letter addressed to the community Monday.
In his letter, Mayor Beggs says people need to remember that the city is still working. “Even if you look to your left and see disorder and look to your right and see empty streets, we are still here working, doing the best we can to protect and serve this community with every resource we can muster, no matter how modest.”
Beggs says that includes keeping public safety up to date.
“We just have to be patient, do our thing, stay safe and continue.”
On Monday, the City took time to make some adjustments that may help residents by authorizing a waiver of late fees and penalties associated with the March utility bill payments. Mayor Beggs says the Council will be considering an extension of the waiver at their next meeting.
The City Police Department also approved a lift of the overnight parking ordinance a little earlier than the original April 1st date. Officers will not be enforcing overnight parking unless there is a snowstorm and vehicles are requested to not park on the streets.
Mayor Beggs says it is important to ask, “How can I help?”
“Check on your elderly neighbors and make sure that they are safe and secure, Beggs said. “That kind of thing makes a big difference.”
Beggs says he got a call himself on Monday from a friend asking if he needed anything. He says it comes down to the Golden Rule, “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.”
“It was important before but we have kind of forgotten about that in the last 50 years but it is time to get back to it.”
The Mayor ended his letter by stating the truth of the concern with a request to stay positive.
“The tide is coming. It might be invisible, but we know it is there and we know it is serious. With the virus comes economic hardship. We hear the alarm bells on the news and we can see it reflected on Main Street,” the Mayor said. “It is a strong town with good people and whatever happens we will recover from it.”
“The tide may be coming in, but if we stand together, we will ride this out. This too will pass.”
