SHAWANO, WI- A project years in the making officially became a reality Monday at Shawano High School, as school and community leaders gathered to cut the ribbon on a brand-new football stadium.
The new facility is part of the $51 million referendum approved several years ago to fund improvements throughout the high school.
Superintendent Kurt Kizan called the unveiling an incredible moment and credited the community for making the project possible.
“It’s about a vision our community had for its school. A commitment that our community made to our students, and the work of many people who turned that vision into a reality.”
The new stadium features a synthetic turf field, and seating for nearly 2,000 fans, giving Shawano students and athletes expanded opportunities both on and off the field.
Brendemuehl says the goal is to make the facility available to all students, from football players and soccer teams to the marching band, cheerleaders and academic programs.
The school also hopes the new stadium will allow Shawano to host neutral-site playoff games. Brendemuehl says the school is open to hosting postseason football.
The new stadium gets its first athletic competition Tuesday, when the Shawano boys soccer team hosts Ashwaubenon.
