Shawano County Sheriff's Office Seeking 911 Dispatchers as Staffing Challenges Continue

SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging community members to consider a career in emergency communications as it continues working to fill 911 dispatcher positions.

Communications Supervisor Kasey Cross said dispatching is an opportunity for people who are passionate about helping others and making a difference in their communities.

“If you have a dedication to wanting to help people and want to be part of your community, this is a great job to get into,” Cross said. “Personally, I love being able to keep my responders safe. I love working with the officers. I love working with the fire departments, the ambulance services.”

Cross said dispatchers are often the first point of contact during emergencies and play a critical role in keeping first responders informed and safe while coordinating emergency responses throughout the county.

While she describes the career as incredibly rewarding, Cross acknowledged that it also comes with significant challenges.

“It can be very mentally straining on someone,” she said. “You’re not dealing with people having the best day ever. This is a great thing to do. It’s tough, but it’s worth it.”

Cross said the emotional demands of answering emergency calls can make it difficult to recruit and retain qualified dispatchers, a challenge faced by many emergency communications centers across the state.

Despite those challenges, the Sheriff’s Office hopes more people will consider joining the profession.

Officials say anyone looking for a fast-paced, meaningful career serving the public is encouraged to learn more about dispatcher opportunities with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office.
