SHAWANO, WI- While school may be out for the summer, Shawano’s School Resource Officers have remained busy serving the community.
Throughout the summer, the School Resource Officer team has participated in community outreach events twice each week, including the popular Lunch in the Park program. The second-to-last event of the season was held Tuesday at Eberline Park, where families gathered for free food, games and an opportunity to connect with local law enforcement and other community organizations.
Officer Tyler Thornborrow said one of the highlights of the program has been seeing multiple agencies come together with a common goal.
“For four different government agencies to all get together and work at something like that is something to be said,” Thornborrow said.
The event also became a family affair for the Thornborrow brothers. Officer Tyler spent the afternoon cooking on the grill, while his brother Nate Thornborrow joined children in games and activities throughout the park.
Looking ahead, Thornborrow believes the program will continue to grow.
“I don’t know what next year brings,” he said. “My assumption is it’s going to be bigger and better.”
He also credited community partners for helping make the program possible, including Auto Select, which donated much of the food throughout the summer, along with Auction Associates and other local supporters.
The Lunch in the Park series concludes August 17 at Co-op Park.
