WAUPACA, WI- A New London man is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he killed his mother and set fire to her apartment in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
Thirty-year-old Rodolfo Gonzalez has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, arson of a building, and mutilating a corpse in connection with Sunday’s fire at the Franklin Park Apartments on Division Street.
According to the criminal complaint, firefighters found the victim inside the apartment after responding to the blaze. An autopsy determined she died from multiple sharp force injuries to the neck before the fire was set. Investigators believe the fires were intentionally started to hide the homicide.
Security video allegedly placed Gonzalez on the fifth floor around the time of the fire, and he was later arrested nearby.
Court records also show Gonzalez had previously been charged with attempting to kill the same victim in 2025. In that case, he was found not competent to stand trial.
A judge set Gonzalez’s cash bond at $1 million. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 6.
