SUAMICO, WI – Marinette put together a dominant run through the American Legion Region 3 Tournament, capturing the regional championship without allowing a single run in its final two games and punching its ticket to the state tournament.
Marinette opened the tournament with a commanding 10-0 victory over host Bay Port on Tuesday before shutting out Green Bay Southwest 5-0 on Wednesday to advance to the championship game.
In Thursday’s title game, Marinette completed its impressive tournament run with a 4-0 win over De Pere. De Pere earned its spot in the championship after defeating Bay Port 4-1 and Green Bay Southwest 6-2, while Green Bay Southwest opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over De Pere before being eliminated.
Marinette finished the tournament with three consecutive victories while outscoring opponents 19-0, claiming the Region 3 championship in convincing fashion.
Meanwhile, in Region 4 at Sunset Park in Kimberly, the host Papermakers also captured a regional title after an undefeated tournament run.
Kimberly survived a 9-8 thriller against Manitowoc in its opener before edging Neenah 12-11 in an offensive semifinal matchup.
The hosts then closed out the tournament Thursday with a 6-0 shutout victory over Neenah to secure the Region 4 championship.
Neenah reached the title game after opening with a 7-5 win over the Appleton Doubledays and eliminating Manitowoc 8-7. Manitowoc also knocked the Appleton Doubledays out of the tournament with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday.
