SHAWANO, WI – Aviation enthusiasts will once again have their eyes on the skies as the 28th Annual AirVenture Cup Race Watch Party returns to the Shawano Regional Airport on Sunday, July 19, bringing more than 100 aircraft and some of the fastest airplanes in the country to the community.

Shawano Airport Manager Kyle Hotvedt says the event offers a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors of all ages.

“It’s a unique event that offers an exciting experience for the whole family,” Hotvedt said.

More than 100 airplanes have already registered for this year’s race, with some aircraft capable of reaching speeds of more than 300 miles per hour. During the race, spectators will have the opportunity to watch the planes fly approximately 500 feet above the runway as they pass over the airport.

The airport will open its gates to spectators at 7 a.m., with the race scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. Admission is free, and organizers encourage visitors to arrive early to secure the best viewing locations.

This year’s event also marks a milestone for Hotvedt, who recently celebrated his first anniversary as Shawano Airport Manager. Looking back at last year’s race, he said he was impressed by the community’s support.

“It was crazy to see how many people from the community came out and showed up for that,” Hotvedt said.

Organizers will once again offer children’s activities during the event after receiving a positive response from families last year.

“We’ve got a little thing for the kids that we did last year, and we’re going to do it again this year. That was really cool,” Hotvedt said.

The AirVenture Cup Race serves as the official fly-in race leading into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and has become one of Shawano’s premier summer aviation events, drawing pilots and spectators from across the region.
