NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Week 9 of amateur baseball delivered dominant pitching performances, extra-inning thrillers, offensive outbursts, and several key league victories across northeast Wisconsin over the Independence Day weekend.
Little Falls Tops Tigerton
The Little Falls Loggers opened the weekend with a 5-2 victory over the Tigerton Tigers on Thursday.
Carter Kurki turned in an outstanding performance on the mound, striking out 11 batters over eight innings to earn the win while allowing just four hits.
At the plate, Kal Fischer went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored, while Spencer Strebe added two hits.
For Tigerton, Dylan Berg collected two hits and drove in the Tigers’ lone RBI.
Wittenberg Sweeps Tilleda
The Wittenberg Pilots picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Tilleda Woodchucks on Friday.
The Pilots rallied for a 7-6 victory in Game 1 behind a balanced offensive attack. Erik Steigerwald led the way with three hits, while Dalton Zeinert, Pierson Potrykus and several others contributed offensively. Brad Bartz paced Tilleda with a perfect 3-for-3 performance that included a home run.
Game 2 was shortened by rain after five innings, with Wittenberg earning a 4-1 victory. Nathan Waupekenay earned the win, while Adin Brei collected both of Tilleda’s hits, including a pair of doubles.
Gresham Cruises Past Marion
The Gresham Gophers defeated the Marion Meisters 9-1 on Sunday.
Wyatt Nietzer earned the victory, while Gresham’s lineup produced four doubles. Treyvon Granquist, Mequon Frechette, Crew Wesnicht and Lukas Pecore each recorded two-base hits.
Nick Schoen and Mitch Elandt led Marion offensively.
Menominee Rolls Past Shawano
The Menominee Indians put together one of the weekend’s most impressive offensive performances, defeating the Shawano Lakers 15-1 in seven innings.
Mitchell VandeWalle finished 3-for-3 with a home run and double, while Pete O’Kimosh added a home run, double and three hits of his own. Kristoffer Kallies also contributed three hits.
Garrett Kandonsky, Ryan Pensis and Lowell Chevalier each doubled for Shawano.
Eland Sweeps Crandon
In Friday’s doubleheader, Eland earned a pair of convincing victories over Crandon.
Eland won the opener 7-1 behind home runs from Kyle Groshek and Peyton Flees, while Tyler Nelson picked up the win on the mound.
The second game ended in an 11-1 Eland victory, highlighted by a huge day from Ryan Richter, who blasted two home runs. Kyle Groshek added another homer, while Peyton Flees contributed two doubles.
Birnamwood Wins Extra-Inning Thriller
Sunday featured one of the week’s best games as Birnamwood outlasted Elderon 11-6 in 10 innings.
The game was tied after Carson Meverden’s dramatic two-run homer in the ninth before Birnamwood exploded offensively in the extra frame.
The Meverden family powered the offense with five home runs. Mason Meverden hit two, while Carson, Connor and Chase Krull each added one. Zandyr Barke also homered for Birnamwood.
Despite the loss, Elderon’s Ian Salvesen had a monster game, going 4-for-4 with a home run and double.
Birnamwood Completes Season Sweep
Birnamwood also claimed a 6-0 victory over Elderon in a makeup game originally scheduled for May.
Mason Meverden tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits while striking out seven over nine innings.
Chase Krull and Zandyr Barke each collected two hits to lead the offense.
Hatley Defeats Antigo Polar
The Hatley offense stayed hot in an 8-2 victory over Antigo Polar.
Hatley pounded out 15 hits, led by three-hit performances from Hayden Davidowski and Ryan Schmitt. Braxton Olsen, Kodie Kocher and Nick Cotter all added multi-hit games.
Antigo Polar matched Hatley with 13 hits, but couldn’t capitalize offensively despite strong performances from Milo Salvesen, Logan Doering and Will Kubeny.
With the regular season winding down, teams across northeast Wisconsin continue battling for postseason positioning as league races begin to tighten heading into the final weeks of summer baseball.
