During the holidays consumers are warned to be on the lookout for phony shipping emails.
Jerad Albrecht with Wisconsin Consumer Protection says seasonal scammers may slip fraudulent emails that use fake shipping or delivery alerts as their bait.
“All they are are ploys to get you to click a link,” said Albrecht. “So that link could drive you to a site where you download malware to your device. It could just be a site that is a ploy to get you to give over your personal or financial information.”
Scammers often use the names, logos and color schemes of major shipping companies and retailers to add legitimacy to their messages
Albrecht said, “If you turn over information and you’re worried about identity theft, you’re going to want to contact our agency and we’ll try to talk you through the steps of how to shore up your identity.”
Your best bet if you receive a questionable email is to delete it and do not click any of the links contained anywhere in the message.
