STOCKBRIDGE-MUNSEE COMMUNITY, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community will make history Tuesday by unveiling the state’s first dual-language highway signs featuring the Stockbridge-Munsee language.
The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Orion Event Center inside North Star Casino Resort in Bowler and will celebrate the addition of bilingual Tribal boundary signs in both English and the Stockbridge-Munsee language.
WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman and Stockbridge-Munsee Community President Shannon Holsey are expected to speak during the event, highlighting the partnership between the state and the Tribe.
The new signs are part of WisDOT’s statewide dual-language sign program, which works with Wisconsin’s 11 federally recognized Tribal Nations to install highway signs recognizing Tribal boundaries in both English and each Tribe’s Indigenous language.
State transportation officials say the initiative honors Wisconsin’s Native communities while helping preserve Indigenous languages and recognizing the history, culture, and heritage of Tribal Nations across the state.
The Stockbridge-Munsee signs mark another milestone in the statewide effort to increase the visibility and recognition of Wisconsin’s Indigenous communities through transportation infrastructure.
